The project, dubbed Gemini+, is being coordinated by Poland’s National Centre for Nuclear Research to meet the needs and financial capabilities of Polish industry, the daily said.

According to the paper, the Gemini+ project has won a subsidy of EUR 4 million from the European Atomic Energy Community, an international organisation that aims to create a specialist market for nuclear power in Europe.

The money will allow the scientists taking part in the project to design and commercialise a High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (HTGR), Puls Biznesu reported.

The daily added that similar projects were successfully carried out in recent years in Germany and Japan, and two more are currently under way in China.

An expert quoted by the daily said that such technology will be “especially important for Poland, because the Polish energy sector is based on coal,” and fossil-fuel power stations are widely considered major emitters of carbon dioxide.

According to the paper, Poland’s energy ministry has said the Gemini+ project could be completed by 2031. (tf/gs)
