Tennis: Poland’s Hurkacz into second round of Wimbledon

Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz has made it through to the second round of the Wimbledon tennis championships in London.

The 22-year-old Pole on Monday beat Serbia’s Dušan Lajović, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, in their first-round men's singles match at the grass-court tournament in the British capital.

Hurkacz, 48th in the world ranking, next takes on Argentina’s Leonardo Mayer.

Meanwhile, Poland’s Kamil Majchrzak crashed out of the men’s singles at Wimbledon on Monday after losing to Spain’s Fernando Verdasco in straight sets, 4-6, 4-6, 4-6.

Rising Polish tennis star Iga Świątek was likewise eliminated from the Wimbledon women’s singles in the first round on Monday by Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic, 2-6, 6-7.

Świątek last year won the Girls' Singles title at Wimbledon.
