According to a survey published by the Ministry of Energy, 59 percent of Poles support the construction of a nuclear power plant, while 35 percent are against it.

Twenty-five percent of all respondents to the survey were strongly in favour, while 16 percent were strongly against.

However, only 42 percent of Poles would agree to having the nuclear power plant built in their region. There are currently two proposed locations for the plant, both in northern Poland.

Just over two-thirds of respondents agreed that the plant would increase Poland’s energy security, while a similar proportion believe that using nuclear power would help combat climate change.

The plan to build a nuclear power plant in Poland was first announced in 2009, though to date no final decision has been reached. The project is expected to cost PLN 24 billion (EUR 5.7 billion) and take a decade to complete.

The survey was conducted using a representative sample of 2,000 adult residents. (sl/gs)
