“This title is a great honour for me,” the director declared during Friday's ceremony.
“Actually, I feel like I'm a part of this school and that I attended it,” he revealed.
A long-standing admirer of Polish cinema, Scorsese doffed his cap, or rather his newly acquired mortarboard, to a number of directors that had inspired him over the years.
“I'm thinking of the films of Wajda, Munk, Has, Polanski and Skolimowski,” he said. “They are important to me.”
The director of such classics as Taxi Driver and Raging Bull came to Poland at the invitation of the Polish Film-Makers Association (SFP).
The association prepared a special review of the master's films to accompany the visit, and Scorsese himself was keenly involved in picking the twelve movies on show.
During Friday's event, Scorsese also met with budding film-makers.
“It was a professional meeting,” Andrzej Bednarek, vice rector of the film school, told Polish Radio. (nh/pg)
