A co-production of two Israeli companies, Cameri and Habima, ‘Our Class’ was premiered in February 2014, in a translation by Anat Zajdman. It was a huge popular success, with a run of over 200 performances.
The play follows a group of Jewish and Catholic classmates from the time in Poland in 1925, as they live through the horrors of World War II and the Holocaust and see some of their old friendships being smashed.
Premiered at the National Theatre in London in 2009, “Our Class” is currently the most popular Polish play.
It has been produced in Canada, the United States, Great Britain, Spain, Italy, Japan, the Czech Republic, Brazil, Denmark, Sweden and Hungary. The Stockholm production was named the most significant theatrical event in Sweden in 2013 and the one in Tokyo received the Yomiuri Grand Theatre Award in the same year.
Słobodzianek’s early plays, “Tutajgroszek” (Roll-a-Pea) and “Merlin” won the Fringe Awards at the Edinburgh Festival in 1993 and 1994. (mk/rg)
