The ceremony was held during the International Film Festival in Bari, southern Italy, and included the screening of one of Wajda’s recent movies – Katyń – and a 90-minute long meeting with the Polish director, who turned eighty nine earlier this month.

Wajda recalled that his honours include two FIPRESCI Awards – for Ashes and Diamonds in Venice in the late 1950s and for Man of Marble in Cannes in the early 1980s.
“At a time when my films were not allowed to be shown at festivals, these awards were a gateway to the world for them,” he said.

Wajda was given a standing ovation by the Bari festival audience. His previous visit to Italy was in September 2013 for the showing of his feature Wałęsa. Man of Hope at the Venice Festival. (mk/jb)
